Living Trees

Materials :

      • The Giving Tree, by Shel Silverstein

      • Paper, pencils, crayons or markers

      • Camera

      • Worksheet

Directions :
Trees are living things!  This activity will help develop your child’s awareness and respect for all living things by gaining an understanding of how trees grow.  In addition, the activity will instill knowledge of the many different kinds of trees as well as an appreciation for their beauty.

      1. Read Shel Silverstein’s story, The Giving Tree. Afterwards, ask your child if they can imagine the world without trees.  What kinds of things do trees provide?

      1. Look around your home to see what things are made from trees and make a list.  You can use the worksheet (See "Printables") provided with this lesson to help you organize your findings.

      1. Now take a walk in your neighborhood and find a tree.  Look at your tree and write down what you see.  This is the scientific skill of observation!  Here are some questions to help you:

            • What do you see in the tree?

            • What do you see under the tree?

            • What colors do you see?

            • Do you notice any special smells?

            • Do you hear anything?

            • How does the tree feel when you touch it?  Describe it.

            • Measure your tree using your hands or arms.

      1. Take a picture of your tree.

      1. Collect a leaf to bring home.

      1. Once you get home, you and your child can draw the answers to the questions you asked about your tree using all the details you remember!

Follow Up :
As an extension of this activity, trace or make a rubbing of your leaf and use the outline as the body of a creature. Add arms and legs. Do this together with your child, but don’t show each other until you are done. How are your creatures the same, how are they different?
