Tell A Story: Space Shuttle

Materials :

      • Paper and crayons or markers

Directions :

      • Tell your child that you'd like him or her to make up a story about traveling in a space shuttle. While a stand-alone activity to practice story structure, this activity could also be part of an inquiry-based research project on space travel in which facts learned can be integrated into the storytelling.

      • You should have bookmarked Tell A Story About Traveling in Space Flash file from the Stories page on the children's site. Open it. It shows a space shuttle going by earth. Read the text. "You are chosen to travel into space on a space shuttle. Tell about your travels in space."

      • Your child may wish to draw the story and then "read their drawing(s)." Or, your child may want to make up a story on the spot. Either is great practice for thinking about story elements.

      • When ready, allow your child to read you his or her story. Express your enthusiasm and gratitude that this story was written for you!

Reinforce The Learning :

Discuss the story your child told. Acknowledge the elements of "story" that your child included referring back to them. Ask your child if they would like to try the Tell A Story activity another time. This helps create positive anticipation for another learning experience.
